Remembering Fr. Michael Jacques

Fr Michael Jacques

As Providence Community Housing approaches its 10th anniversary, we remember the people and partners who have influenced and contributed to the unprecedented effort and dedication to rebuild New Orleans’ most celebrated neighborhoods.

Father Michael Jacques, SSE, pastor of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Tremé for 29 years, dedicated his life’s work to advocating for people living in poverty. Following the devastation of hurricane Katrina, Fr. Michael helped to form Providence Community Housing to ensure that affordable housing and home ownership opportunities would be available to New Orleanians in inner city neighborhoods such as the historic Tremé community.

As a member of the Society of St. Edmund, Father Michael was known for creating a vibrant church parish and civic community.  Under his leadership, St. Peter Claver Catholic Church became the largest African American Parish in Louisiana with more than 2,400 families and was named one of the “top eight parishes in the United States” according to Paul Wilkes, author of Excellent Catholic Parishes. He was also a leader in community development and organizing activities, working with organizations like MICHAH and Ujamaa Community Development Corporation.

“Father Michael was a leader who truly invested in families and had a special concern for the elders and youth in the community,” said Terri North, President and CEO of Providence Community Housing.  “Father Michael was an integral part in forming Providence’s mission and work to develop, operate and advocate for affordable housing that would create vibrant communities and welcome New Orleanians home to their neighborhoods.”

In honor of Father Michael’s legacy of service and Providence’s 10th anniversary, Providence Community Housing will introduce the Father Michael Jacques Legacy Fund.  Donations to the Father Michael Legacy Fund will help support Providence’s ongoing work to provide affordable housing and home ownership opportunities for individuals, families, seniors and people with needs.
