Providence Brings More Affordable Housing to the Lafitte Treme Neighborhood

Lafitte Phase VII Project Closed

Providence’s Lafitte Phase

VII project is officially closed and construction will begin within a few weeks. This is a monumental moment in Providence’s history! This project will complete the development of the former Lafitte public housing site.

Providence Enterprise Orleans (PEO) entered into a Master Development Agreement (MDA) with the Housing Authority of New Orleans on March 6, 2008. The MDA committed PEO to develop 812 units in the designated Lafitte Redevelopment area (which includes the former public housing site as well as the surrounding neighborhood).  Through numerous projects and partnerships, we have produced 895 housing units, including 107 homes sold to low to moderate income families. This project will create 51 additional rental units, bringing the total unit production to 946.

Lafitte VII will consist of 45 new construction, affordable rental units in 35 single buildings and 5 duplex buildings on the city block bounded by Orleans Avenue, North Preiur St, Lafitte Street, North Roman St. (aka Block 6 of the former Lafitte public housing site). An additional 6 affordable rental units will be developed in the final remaining building from the original public housing stock. That building will also house a new property management office serving all of Faubourg Lafitte.

Many people and partners that have brought us to this day and we look forward to acknowledging them all at our official groundbreaking celebration on August 26th. For now, we express our gratitude to Emily May and Ryan Herringshaw who have battled hard to get this project across the finish line and Matt Morrin of Enterprise Community Partners who has been the fuel that has kept Lafitte moving for many years. We are also eternally grateful to Fr. Michael Jacques, Jim Kelly, and Charlotte Bourgeois as well as Doris Koo and Michelle Whetten from Enterprise who had the courage to say yes when HUD asked our organizations to lead this enormous effort. Providence has chosen to place our headquarters in the Lafitte Treme neighborhood. We are here to stay and will continue to look for opportunities to make this neighborhood a better place to live.
